If you are fascinated by engines, hydraulic systems and machinery you could consider a career in designing and building hydraulic components for boats.

You could make cranes for lifting boats in and out of the water at slipways or for lowering a new cabin structure onto a hull at a boat builders’. You could build the hydraulic arms needed to lift heavy outboard engines or fishing gear out of the water or systems that cant the keel or alter the rigging tension in maxi yachts.

Your job may be to build specialized vacuum pumps and motors or to make all the hydraulic hoses, fittings and pipes required for a brand new commercial fishing vessel.

As you gain experience, you could end up designing improved hydraulic systems with better operating performance and equipment longevity that is specialized for the operating conditions required by boats.
