Many important marine components are made from metals such as stainless steel, alloys, manganese bronze, cast iron and high tensile aluminium.

If you develop skills in sheet metal, foundry, fabrication or galvanising, you could make marine hardware and fittings such as anchors, hatches, portlight frames, steering componentry and winches. You could also use your metals skills to make boat trailers, stanchions, bow and stern rails, masts, spars, cleats, rowlocks, motor or gear housings, bollards, slipway cradles, propellers or tanks — to name just a few!

You will apply your skills in engineering drawing, fabrication techniques, geometric development, shaping and bending, welding, mechanical cutting, patternmaking or metal casting. You will be working to the finest tolerances in the workshop with a team of qualified tradesmen to produce items that that are reliable and serviceable in the roughest conditions.

Metal working skills are also sought after in shipbuilding and many manufacturing industries and the skills you learn in the Boating Industry can have you working in many different places.
