Sailors used to rely on commonsense, manual measurement and guesswork to know where they were, where they were heading and what their speed was. While they were offshore, they were out of communication as well. Computers and electronics have changed navigation and communication at sea, and are becoming increasingly essential to all modern boating.

Now many boats rely on electronic autopilot, GPS’s (Global Positioning Satellites), electronic charts and echo sounders — and that’s just for starters!

A job working with electronics will see you responsible for installing, calibrating, maintaining and repairing the autopilot, radar, GPS receivers and computers - particularly in big yachts and commercial vessels. You could also install and maintain HF and VHF receivers, emergency beacons, marine stereo systems, inshore radio, marine TV/FM antenna, solar panels or mounting hardware.

You could use your skills while travelling and working in exotic marinas and slipways all over the world.
